Solar Sales Tips: 8 Ways to Convert More Leads

Generating solar leads is one challenge. Converting them is another. Most solar businesses focus almost entirely on the first problem and wonder why their close rate stays stubbornly low.

At Phantom Digital, we’ve helped solar and renewable energy businesses triple their leads through purely organic strategies. We know that lead volume is only half the equation.

The businesses generating the best revenue aren’t always the ones with the most leads. They’re the ones converting the highest percentage of the leads they already have.

In this blog post, I’m going to cover the eight tips that lead to the most impactful changes you can make to your solar sales process right now, from the first point of contact through to closing the deal.

1. Respond to Every Enquiry Within Five Minutes

This is the number one game changer by a mile.

Speed of response is the single most impactful variable in solar sales conversion, and most installers are losing deals simply by being too slow.

Research by Harvard Business Review found that businesses that respond to leads within an hour are seven times more likely to have a meaningful conversation with a decision maker than those that wait even sixty minutes. For solar, where prospects are often comparing multiple installers simultaneously, being first to respond is frequently the difference between winning and losing the job.

Set up a system that alerts you or your sales team the moment a new enquiry comes in, and make responding within five minutes a non negotiable standard across your business.

If you can’t always respond personally within five minutes, an automated response that acknowledges the enquiry, sets expectations for when they’ll hear from you, and starts building trust immediately is far better than silence. Email automation makes this straightforward to set up and maintain.

2. Ask Better Questions Before You Pitch

The instinct in most solar sales conversations is to start talking about the product as quickly as possible. The best solar salespeople do the opposite.

Before you say anything about panels, inverters, payback periods, or installation timelines, ask questions. What prompted them to look into solar now? What are their main concerns? Have they had any previous quotes? What does a good outcome look like for them?

The information you gather in the first five minutes of a sales conversation shapes everything that follows, and the act of asking good questions positions you as a trusted adviser rather than just another installer trying to close a deal.

Prospects who feel genuinely listened to are significantly more likely to buy. They’re also more likely to give you honest objections rather than polite brush offs, which makes the rest of the conversation far more productive.

3. Build Trust Before You Close

Solar is a significant financial commitment for most homeowners and businesses. The average residential installation in the UK costs between £5,000 and £9,000. Commercial installations run considerably higher. Nobody makes a purchase of that size without a meaningful degree of trust in the company they’re buying from.

Trust is built through multiple touchpoints before the sales conversation even begins. Your website, your reviews, your case studies, and the quality of your content all contribute to the level of trust a prospect arrives with.

The solar businesses with the highest close rates are almost always the ones that have invested most heavily in building trust online, so that by the time a prospect speaks to a salesperson they are already largely convinced.

This is one of the reasons organic lead generation consistently outperforms paid lead buying on conversion rate. A prospect who found you through a Google search, read your content, and explored your case studies arrives with a level of familiarity and trust that a cold shared lead simply doesn’t have.

Every solar salesperson hears the same objections repeatedly. The weather is too unpredictable in the UK. The payback period is too long. The upfront cost is too high. The technology might be superseded.

The most effective way to handle these objections isn’t to wait until they come up and then respond. It’s to address them proactively during your pitch before the prospect has a chance to raise them.

Proactively handling common objections signals confidence and expertise, removes the adversarial dynamic that can develop when objections are raised late in a conversation, and keeps the sales process moving forward.

For the UK weather objection, have the data ready. Modern solar panels generate electricity from daylight rather than direct sunlight and the UK receives sufficient solar irradiance for installations to deliver strong returns across the country. For the payback period objection, have specific case studies and financial models that make the return on investment concrete and credible.

5. Use Social Proof at Every Stage

Social proof is one of the most powerful conversion tools available to any solar business, and most installers are not using it strategically throughout the sales process.

Reviews, testimonials, case studies, and photographs of completed installations all serve the same purpose: they reduce the perceived risk of buying by demonstrating that other people like the prospect have made the same decision and been happy with the outcome.

Don’t save your social proof for your website. Bring it into every stage of the sales conversation, from the initial response email through to the final proposal.

A proposal that includes two or three short testimonials from similar customers, a relevant case study, and before and after photographs of a comparable installation is significantly more persuasive than one that just lists products and prices. It answers the unspoken question every prospect is asking: has this worked for someone like me?

6. Make Your Proposal Simple and Clear

One of the most consistent conversion killers in solar sales is a proposal that overwhelms the prospect with technical detail, jargon, and complexity.

Your proposal exists to answer one question clearly: is this a good decision for me? Everything in it should serve that purpose. Technical specifications, product brochures, and installation details are supporting information. The headline message should be the financial case, presented simply and specifically for their situation.

A clear, one page financial summary showing current energy costs, projected savings, payback period, and total return over twenty years will do more for your close rate than ten pages of technical detail.

Include a clear next step at the end of every proposal. What do you want them to do? When will you follow up? What happens after they say yes? Ambiguity at the end of a proposal is where deals go cold.

7. Follow Up More Than You Think You Should

Most solar sales are lost not because the prospect chose a competitor but because the conversation simply faded out. Life got busy, the decision got deprioritised, and the installer who didn’t follow up lost a sale they could have won.

Studies suggest that 80% of sales require at least five follow up contacts after the initial meeting, yet the majority of salespeople give up after one or two attempts. In solar, where purchasing decisions can take weeks or months to mature, consistent and structured follow up is essential.

A follow up sequence that delivers value at each touchpoint rather than simply asking “have you made a decision yet?” keeps the conversation alive without feeling pushy.

Share a relevant article, a new case study, an update about an incentive deadline, or a financing option they might not have considered. Each touchpoint reminds the prospect that you are knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely interested in helping them make the right decision rather than just closing a sale.

8. Ask for the Business

This sounds obvious. It is consistently overlooked.

Many solar salespeople go through an entire consultation, answer every question, handle every objection, and then wait for the prospect to make the next move. In practice, many prospects need a clear, confident ask to move forward. Not pressure. Just a direct and professional close.

At the end of every sales conversation where you have addressed the prospect’s concerns and built a strong case, ask clearly and confidently for the business.

Something as simple as “based on everything we’ve discussed, are you ready to move forward?” is often all it takes. If they’re not ready, it surfaces the remaining objection so you can address it. If they are ready, it closes the deal that might otherwise have drifted into another follow up cycle.

Convert More of the Leads You Already Have

Improving your solar sales conversion rate is often the fastest route to growing revenue because it doesn’t require generating more leads. It just requires doing more with the ones you already have.

The eight tips above cover the full sales process from first response through to closing, and implementing even two or three of them consistently will have a measurable impact on your conversion rate.

We helped Effective Energy Group triple their leads in twelve months through purely organic strategies, growing from 127 to 371 daily clicks and 15,000 to 42,000 monthly impressions. Better leads, better quality, better conversion. The same approach works for solar businesses at every stage of growth.
