Gym Social Media Strategy: How We Got 1.2 Million IG Views

UTS Gym: Hyrox Simulation

Most gym social media looks the same.

Generic motivational quotes. Stock photos of dumbbells. A class timetable posted on a Monday. The occasional before and after. Then silence for two weeks.

It fills a content calendar without building anything. No real audience growth, no meaningful engagement, no new member enquiries coming through the door as a result.

When we took over The UTS’s social media in Wirral, we did things differently. Instagram views hit 1.2 million. Followers grew 272%. Content interactions increased 640.7%. Link clicks up 338%. Across a three month snapshot, 290,000 views, 20,000 reach and a 6.2% interaction rate that most fitness brands would consider exceptional.

That didn’t happen by posting more. It happened by posting better. Here is exactly what the strategy looked like.

Get Clear on What Your Social Media Is Actually For

Before creating a single piece of content, get clear on the purpose of your gym’s social media presence.

Most gyms treat it as a notice board. Class times, opening hours, the occasional promotion. That’s not a strategy. That’s admin.

A proper gym social media strategy has a clear objective. For most gyms that objective should be building a community that attracts new members and retains existing ones. Every piece of content should serve that objective in some way.

  • Does it showcase the results members get?
  • Does it demonstrate the expertise behind the facility?
  • Does it make prospective members feel like they want to be part of this community?
  • Does it give existing members a reason to engage and share?

If the content doesn’t do at least one of those things, it probably doesn’t need to be posted.

Choose Your Platforms and Commit to Them

For most gyms, Instagram and Facebook are the two platforms worth investing in seriously. Instagram for reach, visual content and younger demographics. Facebook for community, local visibility and an older membership base.

TikTok is worth considering if you have the capacity to create short-form video consistently. It offers significant organic reach for fitness content. But inconsistent posting on three platforms is worse than consistent posting on two.

Pick the platforms where your ideal members spend time and commit to showing up there consistently.

The UTS focused on Instagram and Facebook. The results across both platforms were outstanding precisely because the strategy was consistent and sustained.

Our gym social media management service handles strategy, content creation and ongoing management across both platforms.

Build a Content Mix That Serves Different Purposes

A strong gym social media strategy isn’t built on one type of content. It’s built on a deliberate mix of content types that serve different purposes within the overall strategy.

For The UTS, the content mix looked something like this:

  • Community content — member spotlights, class highlights, behind the scenes moments that build connection and belonging
  • Results content — member transformations, progress updates and milestone celebrations that build social proof
  • Educational content — training tips, nutrition advice, programme explanations that demonstrate expertise
  • Promotional content — membership offers, class announcements and event promotion used sparingly so it doesn’t dominate the feed

The ratio matters. If the majority of your content is promotional, your audience stops paying attention. A rough guide is 70% community and educational content to 30% promotional. The promotional content performs better when it’s surrounded by content people actually want to see.

Make Video the Priority

Video content consistently generates higher reach and engagement than static posts across both Instagram and Facebook. Reels in particular receive preferential algorithmic treatment on Instagram, meaning they reach significantly more people than standard posts.

For The UTS, reels and video content were a core part of the strategy. Class previews, training session highlights, member stories and behind the scenes footage. Short, energetic and authentically representative of what the gym actually feels like.

The bar for gym video content doesn’t need to be high. Authentic, well-lit footage shot on a modern smartphone performs well. What matters is consistency and energy, not production value.

phantom digitalPost Consistently Rather Than Frequently

One of the most common gym social media mistakes is posting frantically for two weeks and then going quiet for a month. Algorithms reward consistency. Audiences reward consistency. One piece of quality content five days a week beats five pieces of average content in a single day.

Consistency builds momentum. Momentum builds reach. Reach builds enquiries.

For The UTS, consistent posting across Instagram and Facebook over a sustained period was a significant factor in the growth achieved. Not occasional bursts of activity. Sustained, reliable presence week after week.

Use Graphic Design to Build a Recognisable Brand

The visual consistency of your social media feed matters more than most gym owners realise. A feed with consistent colours, fonts, design style and overall aesthetic looks professional, memorable and trustworthy. A feed that looks different every week looks like nobody is in charge.

For The UTS, branded graphic design across every post, from promotional graphics and class announcements to event coverage and reels, helped build a recognisable fitness brand that stands out in a competitive market.

Prospective members scroll quickly. A visually consistent, professional feed stops them. Our gym graphic design service creates all visual content across social media and marketing materials.

Engage Actively With Your Audience

Posting content is only half of a social media strategy. The other half is engagement.

Respond to every comment. Reply to every direct message promptly. Like and comment on posts from members who tag your gym. Ask questions in captions that invite responses. Run polls and interactive stories that give followers a reason to engage beyond just watching.

Engagement signals to the algorithm that your content is worth showing to more people.

It also signals to your audience that there are real people behind the account who value their community. Both matter enormously for gym social media growth.

Track What’s Working and Double Down

Every platform provides analytics. Use them.

Track which content types generate the most reach, the most engagement and the most link clicks. Track follower growth week on week. Track which posts lead to direct messages or profile visits. Over time, patterns emerge that tell you exactly what your audience responds to.

The gyms growing fastest on social media aren’t guessing. They’re tracking, learning and doubling down on what works.

For The UTS, consistent analysis of what performed well shaped an evolving content strategy that kept delivering growth month after month. Interactions up 640.7% and link clicks up 338% don’t happen by posting whatever feels right on the day.

Connect Social Media to the Bigger Picture

Social media doesn’t exist in isolation. The most effective gym social media strategies are connected to every other element of the digital presence.

Social media builds awareness and community. Local SEO captures that awareness when prospective members search. The website converts that traffic into enquiries. Email nurtures leads that aren’t ready to commit yet.

When social media is part of a connected system rather than a standalone activity, the commercial impact is significantly greater.

The UTS grew from a strong local gym into a highly visible fitness brand because every element of their digital presence worked together. Social media was the most visible part of that growth. But it was the whole system that turned views and followers into members.
