Choosing a solar installer is one of the most significant financial decisions a homeowner or business in North Wales will make. Get it right and a quality installation pays for itself within a decade. Get it wrong and the consequences range from underperforming systems to voided warranties and difficult recourse.
A note on why we wrote this. Phantom Digital is a digital marketing agency specialising in the renewable energy sector. We work with some of the UK’s leading renewable energy businesses as well as several smaller local businesses. For Effective Energy Group, a multi-brand energy efficiency provider, our digital marketing strategy tripled their leads in 12 months entirely through organic strategy, zero ad spend.
This guide applies that same sector knowledge to North Wales specifically. We have no commercial relationship with any installer listed and have not been paid for any feature. Every company included is currently trading and MCS certified, verified through their own websites, the MCS database and publicly available reviews.
What to Look for in a Solar Installer
MCS certification is non-negotiable. Without it your installation won’t qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee, you won’t receive 0% VAT and warranty claims become significantly harder to pursue.
Beyond MCS, look for NICEIC or NAPIT electrical approval, TrustMark registration and RECC membership, which gives you access to independent dispute resolution if something goes wrong. Ask whether the company uses its own employed installation team or subcontracts. In-house teams generally mean more consistent quality and clearer accountability.

Offer solar, battery storage, heat pumps and EV charging as a single integrated service, which makes them particularly useful for households looking to combine technologies rather than approach each separately.
Specialisms: solar, battery storage, heat pumps, EV charging, integrated renewable systems.
7. HSB Renewable Energy
Based in North Wales. Serving Bangor, Gwynedd and the wider North Wales coast.
Octopus Energy Trusted Partner with over a decade of installations across the region. Their own engineers on every job. Particularly relevant for coastal properties in Gwynedd and Anglesey where higher wind loads and salt air exposure require specific installation considerations that not all companies address.
Specialisms: residential solar, battery storage, coastal property installations.
Local Considerations by Area
Anglesey and Gwynedd have fewer active installers than the north-east of the region. HSB Renewable Energy and JM Renewables are the strongest options here. Coastal and rural properties may have specific structural and planning requirements worth raising with any installer before committing.
Conwy and Denbighshire are covered by Solar North, JM Renewables and Carbon Zero Renewables. Solar North’s Ruthin base makes them the most locally rooted option.
Flintshire and Wrexham have the highest concentration of established MCS certified installers in North Wales. Generation Green, Rawson Solar, MARA Electrical and Carbon Zero Renewables all serve this area actively.
Funding and Grants in North Wales 2026
North Wales homeowners have access to funding options that can significantly reduce upfront costs.
The Warm Homes Nest scheme is the Welsh Government’s flagship programme. For eligible low-income households it can cover up to 100% of installation costs. It has no announced end date and is exclusive to Welsh households.
ECO4 remains open until December 2026 and can fund solar and other measures for households on qualifying means-tested benefits. Given the deadline, applications should be made promptly.
Green Homes Wales offers interest-free loans of between £1,000 and £25,000 for households who don’t qualify for fully funded grants.
All residential solar installations currently attract 0% VAT, and the Smart Export Guarantee pays you for surplus electricity exported to the grid, provided your installer holds MCS certification.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do solar panels cost in North Wales?
A typical 4kW residential system costs between £6,000 and £9,000 before grants or VAT relief. The mean cost per kW in Wales is currently £1,838 based on DESNZ 2025/26 data. Battery storage adds roughly £3,000 to £6,000 depending on capacity. A well-sized system generates around 3,510 kWh annually, saving most households £400 to £600 per year before export income.
Do I need planning permission?
Most roof-mounted residential installations fall under permitted development and don’t require planning permission. Listed buildings and conservation area properties are exceptions. Your installer should confirm this during the survey.
How do I choose between installers?
Get at least two or three quotes. Verify MCS certification directly on the MCS database. Read recent reviews in detail. Ask whether they use employed installers or subcontractors. And ask specifically about their experience with properties similar to yours.
